Painted Wedding Cabinet in Red and Gold
Shanxi, circa 1850
This stunning cabinet is from Shanxi in central China, and is a good example of the beautiful painted cabinets that were produced there for many centuries, often presented as part of a wedding dowry along with silks and other fineries inside. It is in its original vivid red lacquer finish, the thick layers worn in parts to the show the dark wood below, and updated with a glossy clear varnish. The gold paintings on the doors show beautiful landscapes of trees and buildings, with floral motifs on the bottom fixed panel.
The gilt paintings (known as 'miao jin' in Chinese) have stood the test of time well, though have degraded in parts to show just the the dark base below. Two removable shelves have been added inside along with a removable board to access a hidden compartment behind the lower panel. The door hardware is also new. A gorgeous statement piece in any setting.
