Painted Temple Table
Qinghai, circa 1880
This once brightly coloured table was originally used in a temple in Qinghai to hold offerings. The vibrant red lacquer on the front panel has worn, particularly towards the base, to show the wood below. The finish an paintings are all original and common to this type of piece. The main, circular painting on the front is now quite faded, but appears to show scrolling dragons with a central symbol for good fortune. The inside of the table is accessed by doors at each end, as well as upper drawers, providing plenty of space for storage.
