Painted Qinghai Sideboard
Qinghai, circa 1900
This stunning painted sideboard is from the western Chinese province of Qinghai, the simple, box like style being quite typical of furniture from the region. The cabinet is in a very original condition, with the old red lacquer now worn and less bright than when first applied but well preserved. The beautifully detailed paintings of flower vases, brush pots and bronzes on the doors are still very clear, each set against a cream background that is framed in blue, orange and black. A shallow drawer sits below each door (almost certainly recent additions) and there is a single removable shelf inside each of the three compartments. This type of piece, particularly one in such good condition and with old paintings, is now quite difficult to come by in China. This one would make a beautiful sideboard in a dining room but is also low enough to use as a very striking and unusual stand for a large flat screen TV.
