Painted Qinghai Blanket Chest
Qinghai, circa 1860
The red lacquer and original paintings of vases of flowers and scholarly items on the front of this chest have softened over time to leave a more subtle, deep finish with real character. The chest comes from Qinghai province in western China and is made from pine wood. The style and decoration are typical of Qinghai furniture, where trunks and chests like this would be used either in the home or while travelling for storing books and documents or clothes. This one has a thick wooden base and simple brass hinges and lock plate.
