Painted Chinese Opera Trunk
Shanxi, circa 1880
This old trunk is in its original finish and still with the old paintings of flowers and a simple landscape on the front. It would have been used to store costumes and other items by a Chinese opera troupe as they toured the countryside around Shanxi province. The paintings are simpler than on other similar examples, but the soft colours have a lovely character. A simple metal clasp fastens the hinged lid in place.
