Painted Antique Tibetan Storage Cabinet
Tibet, circa 1860
Original antique Tibetan furniture, particularly with the old paintings still in place, is becoming increasingly rare, with most pieces coming onto the market nowadays being reproductions made in China. This lovely painted cabinet is original - one of a few that we have been able to source recently - and the detailed paintings on the door panels are old. Cabinets like this one were normally used to hold important documents or religious scrolls, as well as jewellery and silk ceremonial costumes. They would normally be made from cedar or pine, and were quite rudimentary in construction.
The colours here are typical of Tibetan furniture - reds, greens, yellows and blues - applied using natural pigments that have faded over time. The paintings show flowering peonies, with a single long life symbol set centrally on each of the six large panels. The two right hand panels are fixed, while the central and left hand panels open out to give access to an upper and lower section inside. This is a lovely piece in original condition that would bring an individual character to any setting.
