Mongolian Display Cabinet
Mongolia, circa 1900
This pretty side cabinet is from Inner Mongolia - a type of piece that is becoming increasingly sought after as Mongolian furniture becomes less readily available. The red, green and gold colours are typical of cabinets from that part of China, the gold patterns showing scrolls and, on each of the doors, details of vases of flowers. The cabinet is in pine and the finish, paintings and hardware are all original. The single shelf above the doors and small drawers, framed at the top with some simple carving, would have been used for offerings or for display, and makes the cabinet ideal today as a little bookshelf or storage cupboard next to a bed.
