Low Three Drawer Table, Chinese Antique
Shanxi, circa 1860
This little, low table with three drawers would be ideal today either as a little coffee table or as a small TV stand. Made from 'Qiumu' or catalpa wood, it still has the old brass handles on each drawer. The square, horse hoof feet each have a lovely carved scroll detail - a common motif seen on furniture from the Qing dynasty. The table would once have been used for serving tea or food, on the heated 'kang' platform that formed the main living area in a Chinese home during the cold winter months. Once in a darker lacquer, the colour has worn to leave the lovely tones seen here.
