Low Square Table with Rounded Legs
Tianjin, circa 1900
Unusually, the top panel of this square shaped table is made from a single piece of wood. The material is black locust wood ('huaimu' in Chinese) - a quite dense hardwood similar in appearance to elm but with a straighter grain. The table was almost certainly higher when it was made, used for dining. The legs have been shortened at some point in its history to make it more suitable today as a side table.
