Low Oriental Antique Sideboard, Blue Lacquer
Qinghai, circa 1920
This old pine cabinet originates from Qinghai province in western China. It has new door handles and has been refinished in a distressed, light blue lacquer that gives it a modern twist, but retains the lovely carved apron and side spandrels that taper down to the feet. When the cabinet was made it would most likely have been used to store valuables. The doors to the far left and right would have been fixed panels, converted recently for added practicality. The small doors in the centre would therefore have provided the only means to access the inside. The idea was that this would deter any would be thief from stealing the contents, which would be stored within the far reaches of the cabinet. Whilst not original, the pastel blue colour is beautiful and the cabinet is a great size and height for use as a TV stand in a modern setting.
