Low Red Lacquer Painted Sideboard
Gansu, circa 1920
This lovely old sideboard still has the original paintings on the doors, showing trees and mountain landscapes. When it was made the interior would have been accessed by lifting the three removable boards on the top. Unusually these have been kept loose, rather than being sealed when the cabinet was restored. What were fixed panels on the front have been converted into doors with handles added, making the cabinet more practical today as a dining room or living room sideboard. The red lacquer on the outer frames is original, worn but give a refresh with a new varnish. Three removable shelves, newly added, provide extra storage space.
