Low Elm Wood Table
Shanxi, circa 1880
This long, low table in elm wood may have been designed for use as a low serving table or daybed, or has possibly been produced more recently by cutting down the legs of what was a higher level piece. The original dark lacquer has largely worn to reveal the paler, characterful elm underneath, though is still largely intact around the apron. Made with an extended top surface over recessed legs, supported with long stretchers, the table has a real sense of history and life lived. Ideal today either as a TV stand or as a long coffee table.
