Long Chinese Antique Elm Bench
Shanxi, circa 1900
This long wooden bench is from Shanxi province in central China. It is typical of the rustic, vernacular style benches that were used in many parts of China as occasional seating, designed to be moved around as and when needed. This one is nearly two metres in length, so would be ideal for use with a kitchen table or perhaps for seating in a hallway. Made from thick elm wood, the seat extends over A-frame legs that include some simple moulding and which are supported by double stretchers. The chunky elm seat is cracked and weathered with age, adding real character to a simple piece.
