Large Shanxi Painted Pine Armoire
Shanxi, circa 1920
This large, imposing cabinet is from Shanxi province in central China, still with its old lacquer and paintings, restored with a new varnish to give more depth to the beautiful reddish brown finish. The style is quite distinctive of cabinets from Shanxi, with the doors and mulitple small panels set within rounded, beaded frames. Originally the cabinet would have had just the two central doors, so the outer doors have been added using the previously fixed panels to add practicality and a single removable shelf fitted inside. The paintings in golden brown show various figures and pagodas set against a classic landscape of trees and mountains, with the smaller panels decorated with flowers and, to the top left and right, ancient Chinese characters for good luck.
