Large Shanxi Elm Daybed Table
Shanxi, circa 1870
Produced in Shanxi province, central China, most likely for use as a narrow daybed, this characterful low table would work well today as a long, narrow coffee table or for seating at the end of a bed. Like most furniture from the province the table is made from elm, the wood having a lovely, wide grain that makes the table top highly attractive. The four legs are supported with double stretchers and fit directly into the table top with large mitred tenon joints. They end in unusual shaped feet that are quite different from the more usual 'horse hoof' style seen on many Chinese tables.
