Large Painted Cabinet, Antique Chinese
Shanxi, circa 1900
This fantastic large sideboard would most likely have been used originally as an altar cabinet to hold items placed as offerings. It originates from Shanxi province in central China. Paintings of various flowers adorn the bottom apron and the front top edge, whilst the main paintings on the doors show scenes of the buildings and courtyards of a Buddhist temple, with various figures going about their daily routine. Originally it would have had only the two central doors, but the two outer panels have been converted into additional doors recently for extra practicality. With plenty of storage space inside, the cabinet would work well as a dining room sideboard or for living room storage.
