Large Rustic Elm Coffee Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
This striking elm table would most likely once have been used as a narrow daybed, easily moved for use either indoors or outside for seating and reclining on during the day. Today it would make a wonderful large coffee table, with a stripped back finish that shows off the gorgeous, deep grain and character of the wood. The four thick, moulded legs slot directly into the chunky elm table top, secured with long, double tenon joints. A single stretcher supports the legs at the front and back, with double stretchers at the sides. The carved apron and spandrels fitted at the top the legs add a nice detail.
