Large Camphor Blanket Chest
Beijing, circa 1900
Camphor was used for storage trunks in China from early on as the wood has a distinctive scent that acts as a natural insect repellent. This large trunk would have been used to store clothes and fabrics in the home or when travelling and the wood has a lovely colour and tone. Unusually, the sides and top are each made from a single piece of wood rather than with joined planks and the heavy brass clasp on the front is original. Still a great option for storage today, the trunk would also double perfectly as a coffee table.
