Jilin Double Cabinet, Antique Chinese
Jilin, circa 1870
This brightly painted sideboard is from Jilin, a province in northeastern China that borders North Korea. It is quite typical of furniture from the region, finished in red lacquer and decorated with bright paintings of birds and flowers. The front frame is further painted with a simple border and flowers at each corner. The sideboard would once have been used for storage of grain or rice, with a top lid opening to access the inside. The two doors at the front have been added recently using the original panels, turning the original chest into a more practical modern cabinet. There is a single shelf inside.
