'Hundred Eye' Chest, Black Lacquer - Clearance Item
This modern day black lacquer version has larger drawers for more practical use, each one being ideal to hold CDs and DVDs. Multi drawer medicine chests for holding herbs and other remedies, were used throughout China by apothecaries and pharmacists. The larger ones were referred to as hundred eye chests (or 'bei yau chu' in Chinese) due to the multitude of drawers. The sixteen drawers can hold approximately 400 CDs or use in a bedroom for socks or cosmetics. Made from solid elm with dovetailed drawers and brass ring pull handles. As one Chinese scholar wrote, a drawer is a place that copes with idleness and hides incompetence and we think this piece offers a beautiful way to get organised.
Please note that the actual item on sale has been reduced due to some of the drawers being slightly too shallow to allow CDs to stand fully upright inside - an off day by one of the carpenters at our workshop! With CDs laid back at a slight angle in these drawers the chest will fit approx 320 CDs rather than the normal 400. There is a tiny dent on the edge of the top surface. If you require more images of the actual piece or would like any further information please contact us.
