Henan Weathered Elm Coffee Table
Henan, circa 1870
This simple low table is from Henan province in central China. Made from elm, it is in a stripped back, natural finish that shows the beauty of the aged wood. A weathered top extends over slightly splayed legs, supported by stretchers on each side. The stretchers are fitted using mortise and tenon joints, the tenon ends visible where they protrude through each leg. The legs themselves are similarly joined through the table top, with the ends of the double tenons again visible on the surface - a quite distinctive feature of Chinese furniture.
