Grey Lacquer Qinghai Armoire
Qinghai, circa 1920
The distressed grey lacquer finish on this lovely cabinet is new, applied over the original severely worn finish to give a more contemporary look to this old cabinet. The narrow doors set centrally are a typical feature of larger cabinets made in Qinghai province in western China, where pieces like this would normally be in a red lacquer. The doors are mounted on wooden dowel hinges and fitted with circular brass hardware. The style is quite minimalist, with thick frames and little decoration, easily incorporated into a modern space. The cabinet has a single removable shelf inside, as well as a removable board over the bottom section, which provides extra 'hidden' storage space.
