Gansu Walnut Large Cabinet
Gansu, circa 1900
This large, impressive cabinet is from Gansu province in western China and is made from walnut - a wood that was widely available in the western part of the region. It is in a style that is distinctive of Gansu furniture and one that is becoming increasingly hard to source. Originally only the central two doors would have been fitted, giving access to the full width inside. For practicality what were fixed panels at either side have been opened up and a single shelf added inside. The thick cabinet frames extend into the top of the cabinet and are sculpted at the bottom in a 'deer shape' style that is common to Gansu pieces. The cabinet has been sympathetically restored and finished so as to bring out the beauty of the walnut, with a lovely golden brown tone. At nearly two metres wide the cabinet would be a real statement piece in any setting, with a large amount of storage space.
