Gansu Painted Side Cabinet
Gansu, circa 1920
This old cabinet has most likely been created by cutting a larger grain storage unit into two parts, as its proportions are highly unusual for Chinese furniture. The original piece would have been produced in Gansu province in the west of China, with the thick, chunky pine frames and bright colours that are a feature of much of the furniture from the region. Originally the interior would have been accessed only through the removable panel in the top, but the front panel has been converted into a door and a removable shelf added inside to create a more practical storage unit. The front of the door is decorated with fairly rudimentary paintings of flowers against a diamond shaped cream background, contrasting with the surrounding bright red and black lacquer frames.
