Antique Foo Dog Chest
Shanxi, circa 1900
This charming little chest is in pine and dates from the beginning of the last century. It is of a type traditionally given in China to children by their grandparents. Each year a further gift would be given on the child's birthday, which would be placed inside the box. The fierce looking creature on the front is a 'foo dog' or temple lion - a mythical guardian to protect from evil spirits or harmful influences. The lion, in black and gold, is set against a red background and framed in black with floral detail. A simple brass clasp would allow the box to be locked.
