Antique Foo Dog Box
Shanxi, circa 1900
This lovely old box features a temple lion, or 'foo dog' on the front - mythical creatures that are seen in pairs as stone statues guarding the entrance to buildings in China. Here a single foo dog is painted on the front of the box, designed to ward off any harmful influences. The box is of a type that would be traditionally given to a child on their birthday by their grandparents. Each year a further gift would then be placed inside the box. Usually in red for luck, with decorative paintings in black and gold as seen here. The simple brass clasp on the front would have allowed the box to be locked.
