Floral Painted Black Wedding Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1950
This black lacquer wedding cabinet is from the mid 20th century, still with its original paintings of flowers and birds. The paintings include peonies and a Chinese peacock - symbols for dignity and high rank - now in subtle pinks and creams that have softened over time. The fixed panel below the doors is decorated with a vase of flowers and other possessions, whilst the frames show stylised dragons and long life symbols. The hardware has been added recently, replacing the original similar door plates. With two removable shelves and a lower removable board to give access to the lower section, this would make a handsome addition to any room setting.
