Elm Tapered Shanxi Armoire
Shanxi, circa 1880
This elegant tall cabinet is in elm, the original finish removed to reveal the paler natural wood, with its beautifully patterned grain on the doors. The style is the 'round cornered' design seen through China over hundreds of years. The door panels are set within rounded frames that fit directly into the cabinet's overhanging top and a full width frame above the apron. This gives a very simple, fluid look, enhanced by the slight taper from bottom to top. The black hardware on the doors provides a lovely contrast with the pale wood and provides the only decorative element to an otherwise very pure design. The central post between the doors is removable, giving easier access to the inside, which includes two shallow drawers in a fixed shelf and a further removable shelf. With a simple, natural look that would fit easily into a modern space, the cabinet is perfect for storage in a living room or bedroom.
