Elm Southern Official Chair
Shanxi, circa 1900
This single chair is in elm wood and originates from Shanxi province in central China. It would have been one of a pair but has evidently been separated from its twin over the years. The original reddish brown lacquer is still in place, though now worn particularly on the seat and footrest. The style was one that developed later on in China, with the simple top rail finishing to meet the side posts and the curved armrests similarly meeting their vertical supports.
