Elm Lattice Door Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
This beautiful large cabinet, with lattice doors in the top section, was essentially made as a kitchen cabinet - used for storing food or cooking implements in a Chinese home. Today it would be ideal for storage in a living or dining room. It originates from Shanxi province and is made from a combination of pine and elm wood. It would once have been finished in a darker lacquer, but this has worn or been stripped back to reveal the lovely, characterful natural wood. The cabinet provides plenty of storage space in its upper and lower cupboards as well as five drawers. There is a single shelf inside each section.
