Elm Jiangsu Writing Desk
Jiangsu, circa 1880
This handsome desk comes in three parts (two pedestals and the top section with four drawers) that easily fit together. The style only appeared in China towards the end of the Qing dynasty and was certainly influenced by the West. This one is from Jiangsu province to the north of Shanghai and is made from elm wood, refinished in a dark lacquer that is close to what would have been the original colour. With six drawers as well as two large cupboard spaces, it would grace any home office today.
