Elm Double Bookshelf
Shanxi, circa 1850
This lovely bookshelf would make a fantastic addition to any home office or reception room. It originates from Shanxi province in north central China and is made from elm wood. The dark colour is old, worn in some areas to show the paler wood beneath. Books were usually stacked lengthwise one on top of the other in China rather than vertically, so many shelves are much deeper than the western equivalent, but these are more in proportion for use in a modern home. The shelves are divided into two with a central post, and four shallow drawers at the bottom provide additional storage space. A beautiful and unusual piece in original condition.
