Elm Cabinet with Five Drawers
Shanxi, circa 1880
This beautifully shaped cabinet is in elm wood and still has its original dark finish and old hardware. It comes from Shanxi province, where it would have been used as a storage coffer. It has two centrally set doors giving access to the open section inside rather than the hidden compartment that many similar pieces have, making it more practical as a modern day sideboard. Above the doors, three wider drawers plus two small drawers at each side provide extra storage space. The beautifully carved spandrels at each side taper down to the feet, contrasting with the thick frames and top and adding elegance to an otherwise heavy, solid piece of furniture. In a highly original condition and with little restoration being needed, this piece would add real character to any room.
