Distressed Blue Two Door Sideboard
Gansu, circa 1920
This old cabinet is typical of furniture made in Gansu, western China. In a simple style with chunky frames, it was made originally to hold grain and would have been accessed via removable panels in the top. The doors have been added recently by adapting what were once fixed panels in the front of the unit and each is fitted with a new brass handle. The sideboard has been refinished in a distressed, crackled, greenish blue lacquer that gives a more contemporary look, making a real statement piece for a reception area or dining room. A single full width shelf has been fitted inside to provide more useful storage space.
