Desk with Lattice Shelf
Shanxi, circa 1880
This lovely little desk is from Shanxi province in central China, used for writing and study by a member of China's scholarly classes. Desks of this style were heavily influenced by western design, with many being made for export. This one is in pine wood and has three drawers, each with moulded frames and a simple brass ring handle. At the base of the legs is a latticed stretcher - worn at the front by years of feet resting on top. Still perfect as a small desk today or as an attractive console table in a reception room.
