Decorated Mongolian Cabinet
Mongolia, circa 1900
This colourful side cabinet is from Inner Mongolia, the palette of red, green, black and gold being typical of the painted furniture of that part of China. The finish and paintings are all original, depicting clouds and scrolling patterns against the two narrow doors, front panels and drawers. It is likely that the cabinet doubled as some kind of altar or shrine at some point in its life, as there appear to be burn marks evident in the top surface. These days it is quite difficult to find Mongolian furniture like this in such original condition - not quite as rare as Tibetan furniture but going that way, so our director was pleased to pick this up on a recent visit to Beijing.
