Dark Lacquer Antique Desk
Shanxi, circa 1860
Many of the 'scholar's desks' produced around Beijing at the end of the 19th century were quite narrow, but this one is deep enough to be practical today as a desk in a home office. It has the usual horse hoof shaped feet at the end of its narrow legs and three good sized drawers - ideal for papers and pens. The drawers each still have their simple, original rectangular handles in the centre as well as two rings on the centre drawer and one at either side. These were so that the owner could place a lock across the drawers to keep his documents private. The dark lacquer is original, now worn on the top surface and round the feet.
