Dark Elm Two Door Cabinet, Antique Chinese
Shanxi, circa 1850
This beautiful cabinet is in a simple, pure design that shows off the craftsmanship of the master Shanxi carpenters. It dates from the mid 19th century and still has its old finish - the black lacquer now aged to a more worn look, with the pale elm wood revealed around the feet. The circular hardware is new but in keeping with the style of the original. The bottom apron shows some lovely relief carving of flowers. The top of the cabinet in particular shows the layers of lacquer, crackled and worn down to give a very interesting patina. The single shelf inside is removable.
