Dark Elm Panelled Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1860
This beautiful cabinet dates from the 19th century and is from Shanxi province in central China. The style, with panelled doors fitted centrally and carved spandrels that taper down to the feet, are quite typical of the region. The dark lacquer finish is original and still largely intact, other than on the top surface that has worn with use and age. The doors are each fitted with ring handles and are mounted on wooden stiles. Two drawers above are beautifully carved to show horses facing in opposite directions. Inside is a single removable shelf. Like much of the good quality furniture produce in Shanxi, the cabinet is in elm wood and is in very good condition given its age. A real statement piece for storage in a living room or used as a dining room sideboard.
