Carved Antique Shanxi Drawers
Shanxi, circa 1920
This lovely chest, with powder blue drawers that contrast beautifully with the worn black frames, is made from elm wood and comes from Shanxi province in north central China. Originally it would have been used as a coffer to store valuables, with most likely only the top drawer in place, removed to give access to the larger space below. The drawers are newly added, each with a lovely relief carving in a scrolling floral pattern and fitted with a simple ring handle.
