Cinnabar Red Side Cabinet, Chinese
Qinghai, circa 1880
This lovely little cabinet is in its original, deep cinnabar red finish - a pigment used almost exclusively in the Chinese provinces of Qinghai and Shanxi. As with most Qinghai furniture, it is made from pine and, characteristically, the doors are set centrally rather than flush to the outer frames. The red lacquer has a beautiful colour and tone, worn in parts of the thick side frames and bottom apron, as well as on the top surface. With a single shelf inside, it would be perfect next to a bed or as a little lamp table.
