Carved Antique Panel with Birds
Anhui, circa 1880
This is another lovely example of the exquisite skill and craftsmanship of the wood carvers of Anhui province, who would produce highly decorative panels and other architectural elements for the homes of local wealthy merchants. This would have been one of many wooden window panels inside a courtyard home, fitted to overlook the internal atrium. The central panel, fitted into the surrounding frame without out glue or nails, is carved through and depicts three birds perched on a branch against a lattice patterned backdrop.Other carved elements in the outer parts of the panel show dragon heads and flowers, all symbolic to the house owner who commissioned the work. Beautifully preserved and detailed, the panel would add an unsual decorative element hung on a wall.
