Carved Walnut Altar Table
Shanxi, circa 1870
This long, narrow altar table would make a wonderful statement as a large console in a hallway or reception room. Produced in Shanxi province, central China, around 150 years ago, it is made from walnut wood, the front beautifully carved and lacquered in contrasting green, orange and black. The two central drawers, with simple ring handles, sit over open carvings that incorporate interlinking rings - symbols for prosperity. Either side is a wider drawer, with relief carvings of horses facing each other. The side spandrels at each end of the table are beautifully decorated with ornate, refined open carvings in a floral pattern. A truly unique, stunning piece of furniture that would grace any home.
