Large Carved Lattice Wooden Panel
Jiangxi, circa 1880
This large, architectural wooden panel would once have been mounted as one of many internal window frames, perhaps providing a decorative vista to an inner courtyard of a traditional Chinese home. It was made in Jiangxi province in the southeast of China towards the end of the 19th century, using a combination of fir wood for the outer frames and camphor for the inner carved lattice section. Beautifully made with individual lengths of wood slotted together with mortise and tenon joints, the design incorporates scrolling sections and floral motifs. Beautiful today as a feature on a wall, with the lattice work throwing shadows in the evening light.
