Carved Black Kang Table
Shanxi, circa 1880
Small, low level tables like this one were commonly placed on raised 'kang' platforms in northern China. These would be heated from below during the winter months and used as the main living space. The everted ends of the top surface suggest that this one might have been used for a religious purpose, perhaps as a stand for offerings. The two small drawer are beautifully carved in relief with flowers and leaves. Made from elm, the old black lacquer finish is original, now worn especially around the drawers and bottom frame, giving a wonderful patina. Great as a little coffee or side table.
