Carved Garment Rail, Chinese Antique
Shanxi, circa 1870
Large clothes rails like this one were traditionally used by the Chinese nobility to hand their official robes. This one is from Shanxi province in central China and made from elm wood. The four main panels include detailed circular open carvings to show various animals from the Chinese zodiac, including a rabbit, ox and horse. There are further open carvings below, as well as on the spandrels and pagoda style top rail. The wood has a lovely, rich colour and attractive grain and this is a beautiful item for use as a room divider or as an unusual clothes hanger.
