Four Drawer Dragon Carved Console
Shanxi, circa 1880
This stunning table features beautiful open carvings on the front apron and spandrels in the form of heavenly dragons, the mythcial creatures set in clouds, with wonderful detail showing their scales and claws. The table is from Shanxi in central China, where it would have been used either as an altar table for offerings or for display. The dark, black finish is original and now worn around the frames and particularly on the top surface, which extends over straight legs. With four drawers, each with a simple ring pull handle, it would make a superb distinctive console table today.
