Camphor Travelling Trunk
Shanxi, circa 1920
This little chest is made from camphor wood - a material popular in China for storage trunks and boxes as its strong aroma acts as a natural insect repellent. This one is from Shanxi in central China, where it would most probably have been used as a travel chest. The wood has a lovely colour and patina, and each panel is framed with the original studded metal hardware.
