Camphor Blanket Trunk
Beijing, circa 1900
This wooden blanket trunk was produced in Beijing around the turn of the 20th century. Made from camphor, it is in a beautiful honey colour, with a lovely grain and markings in the wood. Camphor was often used in China for storage chests, not only for its attractiveness but also as its aroma acts as a natural insect repellant. This one is fairly typical of the chests made in Beijing, with heavy brass hardware and tight dovetail joints. Great for storage, it is also a nice size for use as a coffee table.
