Blue Lacquer Chinese Cabinet
Shandong, circa 1920
This adorable blue lacquer cabinet is in the style of large altar cabinets but with much smaller proportions. The upturned flanges at each end of the top surface denote that it would have had some religious purpose - used as a home shrine for ancestor worship. The spandrels and apron are intricately decorated in carved relief with a variety of symbols and flowers. Originally the cabinet would have been in a plainer. brown finish but it has been relacquered in a bright blue, adding a more modern feel to an old piece. There is a single removable shelf inside. Great as a colourful storage unit in any room.
